In a relationship of learning, sharing and caring the students at Holyoke Elementary School are blessed by their friends at the Regent Park Nursing Home and Carriage House. The relationship between the young and elderly in Holyoke builds connections between the generations, cultivates a sense of purpose and extends benefits and blessings both directions.
\r\nOne example of this relationship includes the third and fourth grade Pen Pal program. Each of the third and fourth-grade students has written to an elderly friend at the nursing home, to practice their cursive writing. Students were tickled when many received letters back in response. Then, the nursing home invited the students to visit and make crafts with their pen pals. It was an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
\r\nSecond and fourth-grade students brought the holiday spirit to the nursing home by performing Christmas songs for the residents. Singing, dancing and some corny Christmas jokes brought smiles and joy to all.
Both Girl and Boy Scout troops have also schedule visits during the holiday season.
\r\nThis year, the elementary sunshine committee organized a Christmas giving tree and penny drive to obtain toiletries and activities for nursing home residents. A tub of resources was collected in the elementary foyer and lovingly delivered to our dear friends at the nursing home.
